Construction is now underway for the long-awaited Rails-to-Trails project in Lynn Haven, FL. In collaboration with FDOT’s Sun Trail Program, the Lynn Haven non-motorized trail will support the Rails-to-Trails mission to “build healthier places for healthier people” by encouraging individuals to walk and cycle throughout the city. Lynn Haven City Manager Vickie Gainer is excited to enable more outdoor activities for the community. “In Lynn Haven, we have a lot of cyclists who are interested in getting outside. We don’t really have a trail that is great for cycling, walking, and enjoying the open air.” Gainer said.
The project consists of a newly constructed 12-foot-wide paved asphalt multi-use trail. It will extend over three miles and run along the old railroad track from SR 390 to US 231. The trail hours of operation will be from dawn until dusk. The construction includes striping, concrete work, stormwater improvements, trailheads, parking, accessory structures, and building other amenities.
The city secured a grant in excess of $4M from the Department of Transportation to fund most of the Rails-to-Trails project. The engineering for the trail was completed in 2017, but construction funding was delayed by Hurricane Michael. The anticipated completion date is August 2023.
