Community engagement is at the heart of Holly Hanessian’s creative practice. Her project-based artworks emphasize inventive solutions for social issues that connect people to new ways of thinking. In each project, she meets with community members on a one-to-one basis to build relationships, create ownership, and collaborate. Her current project links plastic bottled water overuse to climate change and includes the production of Hurricane Emergency Art Kits and Go-Packs for seasonal assistance with hurricane preparedness and recovery.
Hanessian’s artwork is positioned at the intersection of socially engaged art, design, craft, and contemporary art. Many of the community-based art projects focus on at-risk populations who are often underrepresented and adversely affected by global warming events. The public facing projects she develops are rooted in the need to create a collectively just and sustainable life for all. Holly Hanessian is currently Professor of Art/Ceramics and MFA Graduate Program Director at Florida State University.
