Bay County Chamber of Commerce issued the following announcement on April 7.
Gulf Coast State College will hold a dedication ceremony at the “Sgt. Nick Rivera Firearms Training Range” on Thursday, April 14 in honor of the former long-time College employee, Sgt. Nick Rivera. Rivera tragically lost his life on October 18, 2018, in the wake of Hurricane Michael, while helping others clear their land.
Nick Rivera retired from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) after serving 30 years. Before retiring from the FHP, he worked as an adjunct, while also serving as an active reserve officer with the FHP. In 2012, he began working full-time for the College as the Assistant Coordinator of Public Safety and was the Coordinator of Advance Public Safety Training.
Nick made significant contributions to Gulf Coast State College and local and regional law enforcement agencies. Over the years, Nick was a central figure in the basic, advanced, and specialized training for a vast number of law enforcement officers in the Gulf Coast region. Nick cared deeply about the profession and made every effort to ensure that new officers were prepared for the many challenges they would encounter.
Additionally, Nick’s influence was evident across the state as a result of his service to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, where he represented the College in areas such as curriculum development and the Law Enforcement Basic Recruit Training Program.
