City of Panama City Beach issued the following announcement on February 2.
Construction continues on a $278,000 project to improve drainage on Hombre Circle in the Glades subdivision between Panama City Beach Parkway and Hutchison Boulevard.
The public works project, which started in June of 2021, removes sedimentation from the existing 42-inch culverts. As part of the construction, a portion of Hombre Circle is currently closed to local traffic only through the end of February. It is the second closure necessitated by the ongoing construction, expected to be completed by the beginning of March.
Paul Casto, who represents Ward 4 where the subdivision is located, said this is additional drainage improvements in a neighborhood that experiences localized flooding.
“There are a couple of big culverts in there that have been stopped up for a long time. This project will help that whole Glades Basin drain, by taking the stormwater across Panama City Beach Parkway and into the new drainage ditch what was put in on the north side of the Parkway,” he said.
The project includes the installation of two concrete inlets connected to existing double 42-inch concrete pipes under Hombre Circle. It also includes removing and replacing a corrugated metal pipe that collapsed between two residential lots within this same area.
“We never want anyone to be flooded,” Casto said, “and that has happened. This project should help keep the water moving out of that area.”
The Public Works department, with approximately 30 employees, oversees stormwater, street and engineering projects within the City. The Stormwater Division maintains and repairs all the City’s storm drains, roadside swales, ditches, retention ponds and beach outfalls.
L&R Contracting of Panama City is the contractor on the project.
