City of Panama City Beach issued the following announcement on November 19.
Terry Parris of Panama City Beach Fire Rescue was recognized with the Firefighter award by the Bay County Chamber of Commerce during Friday's Annual First Responder Appreciation Luncheon.
Parris is a 30-year veteran in the field of firefighting. During his decades of service, he has performed and participated in several incidents where courage was required and tested during firefighting operations and during other time-sensitive, emergency situations. The last few years have been extremely difficult for Bay County First Responders, who see horrible things firsthand. They deal with people at extremely traumatic medical scenes on a daily basis. Some of these result in death. Because of the nature of their jobs, first responders in all disciplines can struggle with mental health wellness. Division Chief Terry Parris saw a need and formed the Critical Incident Stress Management Team for Bay County. This team is made up entirely of first responders and serves the needs of all first responders, not just firefighters. It is impossible to calculate the number of first responders who have been helped by the work of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team.
Congratulations, Terry, on this prestigious award and being selected by your peers!
