Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau show that the number of older adults nationwide continues to increase while the number of children declines. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans aged 65 and older rose by 13%, whereas the population under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the last century, the older adult population in the U.S. has expanded significantly, going from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study found that close to half of older adults—some 28 million people—may need long-term services and support, with projections indicating that more than a third could eventually require care from a nursing home.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
